Rose and Lilli Pilli Gardens

Cremations

Our dedicated Rose Gardens and Lilli Pilli Gardens provide peaceful, well-maintained settings for the interment of cremated remains.

The Rose Gardens feature beautifully tended rose plantings that create a timeless and comforting environment. These gardens offer carefully positioned ashes interment sites, with options available for single memorials and selected areas allowing for shared placements. The seasonal blooms and ongoing care ensure each memorial space remains welcoming and dignified throughout the year.

Complementing the roses, the Lilli Pilli Gardens provide a softer, more natural setting characterised by lush greenery and flowing garden forms. This area is ideal for those who prefer a garden-style memorial that blends seamlessly into the landscape while still offering a permanent and meaningful place of remembrance.

Perpetual Memorials

Perpetual Memorials

Payneham Cemetery offers a selection of perpetual memorial options for those wishing to create a lasting tribute without an associated burial or ashes site. These memorials are ideal if you are surrendering a site, or if ashes have been scattered elsewhere, while still providing a permanent place of remembrance within the cemetery.

The Butterfly Wall allows for personalised bronze butterflies to be installed as an enduring memorial, symbolising remembrance, transformation, and ongoing connection.

Monumental Masons and Foundries

We proudly work alongside members of the South Australian Monumental Masons Association, ensuring the highest standards of skill and craftsmanship in every memorial. Our trusted partnerships with foundries such as Phoenix and Arrow Bronze allow us to provide beautifully crafted plaques and metal works that honour each individual’s memory with lasting quality.

For all bronze plaque needs — including the creation of new plaques, updates, or renovations — families are welcome to work directly with us here at the cemetery. For headstones and stone monuments, we recommend contacting your chosen monumental mason directly to discuss design, materials, and installation.

Childrens Memorial

In 1997, the Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries Trust began developing dedicated reflection spaces to bring comfort to families grieving the loss of a child. This vision included not only those laid to rest within the cemeteries but also children around the world whose lives were tragically brief.

After the opening of the Children’s Memorial Garden and Lilly Pond at Dudley Park in 1998, plans turned to creating a companion tribute at Payneham Cemetery. The intent was the same: to offer a memorial for babies and children who lived only briefly, including those who have no epitaph of their own. A prominent site beside the Shrine of Remembrance was chosen to ensure this new monument would become a significant and cherished place within the cemetery.

During preparations, it was discovered that the chosen area included the resting place of John Caskey, interred in 1918. In an extraordinary act of generosity, his descendants graciously offered the site to be transformed into the Children’s Memorial. Their kindness remains deeply appreciated by the Trust and is an important part of the memorial’s story.

The project became a true community effort. Through the Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council’s Brian Polomka Design Award, the Trust was able to engage local artists, leading to a partnership with Payneham sculptor Renate Nisi. Her design—children joyfully playing among the water—captures both innocence and remembrance. The water feature and pond were then built with great care by the staff of Payneham Cemetery, who willingly learned new skills and volunteered their time to help create this meaningful space.

The Payneham Children’s Memorial was officially opened in May 2006. Today, it continues the Trust’s enduring mission: to provide a place of reflection, healing, and remembrance for families grieving the loss of a child, whether here in our community or anywhere in the worl
