The Poets Niche Walls

CremationsPre-need

Bush poetry has played a profound role in shaping Australia’s cultural identity. From the 19th century onward, poets like Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson, and Mary Hannay Foot captured the rugged beauty of the landscape, and the deep sense of mateship that defined life in the bush. Their words helped forge a uniquely Australian voice — one grounded in courage, connection, and an enduring love of the land.

It is this timeless influence that inspired the creation of the Poets Niche Walls at Dudley Park Cemetery. Built from Flinders Ranges Stone, these 5 walls offer a dignified and lasting place of remembrance — a setting where your loved one’s legacy can rest alongside the spirit of Australia’s most cherished storytellers.

Interment rights are available to purchase for 25 or 50 years as single plots. If you are purchasing a site with the intention of interring ashes, we can take care of everything for you at the same time — including the interment itself and the design, creation, and installation of a beautiful bronze memorial plaque.

If you're not quite ready for that step, this site can also be purchased as part of your pre-planning, giving you peace of mind for the future.

Childrens Memorial

Perpetual Memorials Children

In 1997, the Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries Trust began work on creating dedicated reflection areas in both cemeteries to honour babies and children taken too soon. This vision was shaped by a long tradition of remembrance dating back to 1864, when cemetery regulations first required the recording of every burial at what is now Dudley Park Cemetery. Despite these early efforts, many infant burials from the past were not fully documented, and as the cemetery evolved, the Trust preserved all surviving plaques and headstones to ensure every child would continue to be remembered.

A particularly significant part of this history relates to the period between 1978 and 1986, when Dudley Park Cemetery became the resting place for babies who were taken directly from hospital after complications at birth—often without families being aware of the arrangements at the time. Each child was laid to rest with care and dignity in what later became known as the Tilley Garden.

To acknowledge these histories and provide a gentle place for reflection, the Children’s Memorial Garden and Lilly Pond were created. This serene space includes ‘Me Too’, a sculpture by Silvio Apponyi, along with bronze artworks and granite tablets that honour children from different eras of cemetery record-keeping. The tablets along the tree line bear the names of early infant burials, while upright plaques commemorate the decades in which babies were brought directly from hospital.

The Children’s Memorial Garden was officially opened on 13 October 1998 by Sir Eric Neal and Lady Neal. Today, it continues to offer a place of comfort, remembrance, and healing—a space where families can honour their children and know their memories are held with care.
